I was a research associate at Health and Addictions Research, Inc. in Boston, a non-profit firm (no longer in business) that conducted research and evaluation in the addictions, behavioral health and criminal justice.  Among many other projects, we conducted prevalence surveys of adolescent substance use in Massachusetts and participated in the National Institute on Drug Abuse's (NIDA's) Community Epidemiology Work Group (CEWG) on illicit drugs in the United States.  Through my involvement in these and other studies I've learned something about addiction, patterns of substance use, and drug policy.  Not surprisingly, I tend to approach these issues from a naturalistic stance, one that questions absolutist pronouncements about the evils of altered consciousness, while still taking very seriously the health consequences of drug use, especially for developing adolescents.  See, for instance, Heroin: The Problem with Pleasure, The Science of Stigma, Keep Marijuana Illegal - For Teens, and Ecstasy and Authenticity.   All opinions are strictly my own and do not (yet) reflect policies endorsed by either the State of Massachusetts or such organizations as NIDA.  Such opinions sometimes elicit irrational counterattacks: see my open letter to Alan Leshner, who took exception to my proposal to reform marijuana policy.  For the opposite of Leshner, see the Vaults of Erowid.

I also run a small sound recording business in the Boston, Massachusetts area, called Location RecordingsAs the name suggests, I do mostly on-location two track digital recordings for individual musicians, university music departments (e.g., Tufts, Harvard), and choruses and chamber groups.  I offer computer-based digital editing and CD production.  For further information on services, rates and availability please email me by clicking here (twc@naturalism.org).
